How to Prepare for a Ski Vacation

Unless you live in a snowy climate, you probably don’t own lots of snow gear and cold weather clothing. Here are some tips for packing your family for a ski vacation—without breaking the bank.

Ask for help: Do your neighbors go skiing every year? Do you have friends with a time-share ski chalet? See if you can borrow ski bibs, boots and other outwear for your vacation. In exchange, offer babysitting, a home-cooked meal or a gift certificate.

Check thrift stores: Most thrift stores have a few ski items in stock, even in warm weather locations. Look for heavy coats, gloves and ski bibs at a fraction of the cost of buying new or even renting.

Buy only essentials: Pick up undergarments, new socks and face and ear protection. These items stay directly against the skin and should be purchased new. Consider sports-quality sunglasses as well.

Rent your gear: Ski shops will rent outerwear as well as gear like skis, boots and snowboards. Check for discounts for multiple days or big groups. Get a thin pair of gloves to wear under heavy gloves if you feel weird renting gloves.

Pack sunscreen and ointment: Avoid inflated prices at your ski vacation destination by purchasing sunscreen and face and lip ointments ahead of time. Don’t forget first aid basics like blister relief bandages and antibiotic ointment.

Research discounts: Before you leave, find out if your ski vacation resort offers discounts on other attractions, meals, or rentals. If you put some extra time in before your trip, you’ll be more likely to find savvy ways to save money.
