New York vacations: How to Get Around

Nervous about traveling to the Big Apple? Don’t be. It’s one of the easiest cities to travel around. New York vacations are perfectly appropriate for couples, families or singles. Here are some tips to help you get where you’re going in New York City.

The Subway: Don’t be intimidated by NYC’s subway system. It’s actually very easy to use. As long as you’re not traveling alone super late at night, it’s also very safe. Here are some subway tips:

  • Don’t get in people’s way. Locals are usually in a hurry. If you’re lost, step aside against a pillar or wall while you get your bearings.
  • Consult maps. Ask your hotel concierge for a subway map. Don’t buy one on the street. If you have an app-enabled cell phone, you can also download free subway maps.
  • Ask for help. Not sure if you’re supposed to be traveling uptown or downtown? Ask someone. If you’re unsure about asking a stranger, as a transit employee.
  • Pre-fill your Metrocard. Use the automatic machines to put money on your metrocard right away so you don’t get stuck in lines later when you’re in a rush to get somehere.
  • Relax: If you miss your train or miss a stop, relax. Your mistake can be easily reversed. Get on the train going the other way, or simply wait. The next train will arrive soon.

Cabs: Sometimes it’s cheaper to take a cab. This is especially true if you have four people in your party. Just remember to use a reputable cab service.
  • If you’re at a hotel or restaurant, the doorman will direct you.
  • These days, you don’t need cash, but you should consider using it. The drivers are paid more quickly if you use cash.
  • Don’t forget to tip.
